Joint Replacement Procedures and Expected Hospital Stays

Knee Replacement: Total knee replacement/arthroplasty (TKR, TKA): Both weight bearing surfaces of the knee are resurfaced with possible resurfacing of the patella (kneecap). Expected time in the hospital: 5-days

Partial knee replacement/arthroplasty (also called medial uni-compartmental or lateral uni-compartmental): Only the part of the knee that is diseased is resurfaced and the part of the knee that is not diseased is not resurfaced. Expected time in the hospital: 3-4 days

Patello-femoral arthroplasty (Knee cap resurfacing):Expected time in the hospital:3-4 days

Revision of knee replacement: A re-operation on a knee that has had a previous knee replacement which has failed or become loose; part or all of the previous implant is removed and replaced with a new one. Expected time in the hospital: 5 days

Bilateral partial or total knee replacements: Both knees are replaced. Expected time in the hospital: 7-8 days

Hip Replacement: Total hip replacement/arthroplasty (THR, THA): Hip ball and socket are replaced. Expected time in the hospital: 4-5 days

Revision of hip replacement: Are-operation on a hip that has had a previous hip replacement which has failed or become loose ;part or all of the previous implant is removed and replaced with a new one. Expected time in the hospital:5-6 days

Bilateral hip replacement: Both hips are replaced simultaneously. Expected time in the hospital: 5-6 days
